Figure of Iris from the west pediment of the Parthenon

Figure of Iris from the west pediment of the Parthenon

The Acropolis, Athens, Greece, about 438-432 BC

The west pediment of the Parthenon showed a local Athenian myth, the contest between the goddess Athena and Poseidon, god of the sea, for the land of Attica (the city of Athens and its countryside). Athena and Poseidon were shown on a colossal scale at the centre of the triangular composition, while other figures were ranged on either side. These included two chariot groups, one for each of the protagonists.

Both Athena and Poseidon were accompanied by divine messengers, Athena by Hermes, Poseidon by Iris. She is shown as if just alighting on the Acropolis. Her drapery is pressed flat against her body and flutters out at the edges. It was held at the waist by a bronze girdle, now missing. Her wings, also missing, were socketed in to her shoulders at the back, where the joins would not have been seen.

Nick Georgiou is a Queens born artist who breathes new life into old newspapers. All of his works are vividly sculpted out of newspapers and books that he collects. I don’t know the exact whereabouts of this sculpture, nor the date it was created.

Pieta

Pieta- Created by Michelangelo

The famous sculpture, Pieta, was created by Michelangelo in 1498. In only two years he carved from a single slab of marble, one of the most amazing sculptures ever created. Michelangelo was not the first to create the Pieta, however his interpretation was far different that others. His sculpture depicts the virgin Marry holding her son Jesus Christ after his death. Michelangelo created Marry to be youthful instead of old and heartbroken like other sculptures. Pieta is only one of Michelangelo’s magnificent sculptures; however, it will continue being appreciated for years to come

“Pair of Chairs” by Scott Burton.

art by Scott Burton

He made this “Pair of Chair’s”.  DATE/DIMENSIONS- 1980-81./Stone (gneiss), 49 1/4 x 43 1/2 x 40″ (125.1 x 110.5 x 101.6 cm) and 44 x 66 x 42 1/2″ (111.6 x 167.7 x 108 cm).     Throughout Scott’s career, He was interested in making art that was both aesthetically pleasing and that had a function or a use. And in fact these Chair’s are the only works in the Garden that you can actually sit down upon, very literally taking a break from looking, and just relax. Scott Burton began as a performance artist. He used furniture on stage as props, and then over time developed a body of work that comes out of furniture, And he always spoke of chairs as being at the core of his work, because, of all the categories of furniture, the chair was the most psychologically charged. If you think of a table, a shelf, its something you just put objects upon.  A chair you literally experience it physically and visually.

( <My thoughts i think that the “stone chair’s” are very interesting from my interpretation.> <I wonder if they will let me sit on the chair.> By Cody White)

Moses

This is a picture of Moses. Michaelangelo made this statue. This statue was made in honor of him. At the time of this statue Moses left the Israelites to climb Mt. Sinai. A golden calf muscle was put on the statue of Moses so they could worship him and make sacrifices for him.
