This sculpture was carved to capture the original artwork, the Replica Mask Pan which could be used for a home or a design for an office. A God of shepherds and flocks, he was depicted with a reed pipe, a shepherd’s crook and being half-man half-goat, with horns, a goat’s beard and goat legs. He personifies humanity’s animal nature. He was a popular God, though never part of the official Olympian pantheon. Pan has much in common with Dionysus in that he is associated with wine, sex, and passion in general. the artists is unknown.

This important church front was the starting point of the Via Tolosa, the route that led from Arles to Toulouse (Saint Sernin) with the final destination started in Santiago de Compostela. “This sculpture was taken by people coming from all over the world just to see the sculpture. They had come after crossing the Alps at Montgenèvre Pass, or by the road along the Ligurian coast. According to Alan Borg, the earliest church at this site was probably a 9th century Carolingian church dedicated to Saint Stephen but by 972 the relics of Saint Trophimus had been deposited in the church. By the beginning of the 12th century the church was dedicated and named solely for that first bishop of Arles. The impressive facade of the existing church, dated from 1170-1180, it shows the influence of classical antiquity, particularly in its gable, classical columnar forms, statues with Roman solidity and architectural details–fluted pilasters, classical moldings, and variations of Corinthian capitals. This might not be surprising to many people, given the fact that Arles was an important Roman city with Roman monuments that survive even today.

Italian artist Maurizio Savini uses chewing gum as the material for his art and these sculptures are creatively well done. That’s a lot of chewing gums for the size of his sculptures and I wonder if he actually bought those from the supermarkets.
