Christ & St.Thomas

The creator of Christ & St. Thomas was Andrea del Verrocchia. It was started in 1467 and finished in 1483.   The sculpture was created in a bronze tone  It is located in Florence, Italy.  It is a Biblical statue.  This statue was built  “without backs” because it was only to be viewed from the front.  Verrocchio made the statue in wax.  Then plaster was put over the wax, and the wax was removed, leaving a mold. The metal was heated over a furnace until it melted and became molten liquid. The molten metal was poured into the mold and slowly allowed to cool.  When the plaster was chipped away, the bronze statue was inside. The statue then needed to be finished and polished.

“Bird Girl”

“Bird Girl” was sculpted originally in 1936 by a woman names Sylvia Shaw Judson. A young girl that Judson knew modeled for this, and she ended up making four of them. The most famous one that is seen here was sold to a family in Georgia who set it up in their family plot in the Bonaventure Cemetery; they called it Little Wendy. The statue remained mostly unnoticed until 1993 when she was featured on the cover of a novel by John Berendt. The book cover and the statue became very famous very quickly because of it’s innocent appeal in such a seemingly dark place. The family ended up giving the statue to the Telfair Museum of Art in Savannah so that fans of the statue could view it easier.

Bruce Nauman's neon sculpture created in 1967

This particular piece was created by American artist Bruce Nauman in 1967. It is titled “The True Artist Helps the World by Revealing Mystic Truths.” It can be found at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. It is a neon sculpture created to look like signs in cheap motels, shop windows, and bars. Nauman’s sign advertises a deeply personal message as if it were for sale. Throughout his career, Nauman studied things that he thought to be the roles and responsibilities of an artist. The title statement of this piece is poetical, profound, and playful.
